The Heritage Awareness Committee, comprised of students, faculty and staff, is collecting gently-used children books for children ages two to five, until Friday, Jan. 24. As part of MLK Week 2014, “Until All Are Free,” there will be a Day of Service on Sunday, Jan 26., from 3-6 p.m., in University Suites 106, located on East Campus.

MLK Week is a week-long celebration of the work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In addition to the Day of Service, there will also be an oratorical contest on Monday, Jan. 27, from 7-9 p.m. in Alumni Hall, and the MLK Celebration Dinner, which is sold out.

Students interested in volunteering for the Day of Service can do so by signing up for half-hour shifts at www.uml.edu/clubs. Volunteers are needed to bundle books and to write Valentines as well as uplifting letters to members of the Lowell community.

The Day of Service is a great way to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr., said Connie Cabello, associate director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs. “This is about MLK Jr. and remembering his legacy. It is important for us to remember his legacy, and this is one way for us to do that,” she said.
