RE: Welcome Back and Campus Safety

At the beginning of each semester, colleges and universities across the country reach out to their students to remind them of important steps they can take to contribute to the safety and security of their community and themselves.

It is important to remember that every member of the campus community has a shared responsibility for public safety. This responsibility includes reporting suspicious or criminal behavior to the University of Massachusetts Lowell Police Department (UMLPD) and taking appropriate steps to ensure your personal safety.

The goal of the UMLPD is for you to achieve your educational goals in a safe and secure environment. To serve that goal, the UMLPD, in conjunction with other University departments, has undertaken several new public safety-related initiatives since the beginning of the 2013-14 academic year.

In addition, all members of the campus community should follow these guidelines:

Personal Safety

  • Avoid walking alone at night
  • Use the campus transportation system, especially after dark
  • Be alert and trust your instincts
  • Lock your door when leaving your residence hall room
  • Do not allow yourself to become impaired and jeopardize your safety
  • Always report suspicious activity to police (978-934-2394 from your mobile or off-campus  phone or ext. 42394 from a campus phone)

Pedestrian Safety

  • Use caution when crossing streets
  • Obey the pedestrian walk signs
  • Do not assume vehicles will stop; always look first

Communications

  • Use the blue-light emergency phones located throughout the campus when needed
  • Pay attention to your surroundings when walking and using your mobile phone or other media device
  • Program 978-934-2394 as “Police” and 978-934-4911 as “Emergency” in your mobile phone

Identity Theft

  • Do not share your passwords or PIN numbers with others
  • Always protect your Social Security Number and Student ID Number

Remember that UMass Lowell is an open, urban campus. Please use common sense and make safe choices.

Welcome back to campus and have a safe and successful spring semester.
