The UMass Lowell softball team earned its first win of the season in dramatic fashion at the Hampton Inn Dunn Invitational last Friday, rallying from six down in the last two innings to beat Campbell University in the first game of the doubleheader, 8-7.

By the third inning, the River Hawks had dug themselves a hole early, finding themselves down by five by the top of the second inning and then by six in the top of the third.

They displayed persistence and resiliency throughout the contest, and it showed when Melissa King got her team on the board with a two run single in the sixth inning. She would later score on an Emily O’Brien double.

UMass Lowell rallied for sixth total runs in the top of the sixth inning, and senior Ali Ferraro scored the winning run in the seventh on a fielder’s choice following an error that allowed teammate Alyssa Zinkiewicz to get on base.

The River Hawks appeared to use up all their rally magic in the first game, as they suffered a 13-1 loss to Seton Hall.

In what will undoubtedly be a season filled with learning experiences, UMass Lowell softball started off their season right, believing in themselves and earning a Division 1 victory.
