Q & A: The new Honors College

UMass Lowell’s Honors Program was recently elevated to the status of an Honors College.

Q: When did the idea of an Honors College originate?

A: “Over the years, as the university was growing, but it really gained momentum when Jim [Canning] came” – Elizabeth Donaghey, coordinator of the Honors Program

“When we made the move from 18 to 24 credits, that was all a part of the process.” – James Canning, Honors Program director

Q: How will the program’s transition to a college affect current students?

A: “There will be more recognition for Honors students. I think there will be more resources for Honors students. The Honors College is a network of people across the entire campus. – Canning

Q: Where will the Honors College be located?

A: “The third floor of University Crossing.” – Canning

Q: When will the college go into effect?

A: “It is immediate. We are a college today.” – Canning

Q: Will the application process change for new students?

A: “Currently it is the same as it was in past years. I do think the number of Honors students will grow.” – Canning
