Amanda Robinson and Sheila Angelo for president and vice president

Hello Students! My name is Amanda Robinson; I along with Sheila Angelo hope to gain your support for Student Government Association president and vice president through our continuous determination to advocate on the Student Government Association at the University of Massachusetts Lowell for student’s interests, rights, and concerns. Through our experience in student government we have learned how to reach out to students and effectively advocate for them using SGA resources and opportunities. We are excited to seek election for Student Government Association president and vice president, to enhance student advocates to create a better living and learning community for all students.

While on SGA I have been a senator and the committee chair of campus life and environment. In these roles I have played an active role in enhancing student life on campus. First semester I was the co-chair of a tobacco free coalition where I mobilized student support on campus. I also listened to student concerns and vocalized them to administrators so the transition to a tobacco free campus would help all students. In addition to that I aided Anna Hansen in creating a food recovery system in campus dining halls. In the past at the end of the day the dining facilities on campus would throw away all the leftover food that students pay for. Instead of allowing that food to go to waste the food recovery act takes that food and brings it to a homeless shelter. As the chair of the campus life and environment committee I encouraged my committee members to take on projects of their own so they could become further involved in SGA. My committee successfully took on major issues such as dining hall hours, rec center prices and equipment, and sustainability on campus. As president I will conduct the student government in the same manner encouraging all of student government members to take on his or her own issue on campus to enrich all aspects of UMass Lowell.

SGA is the governing association at UMass Lowell responsible for overseeing student clubs and organizations on campus as well as conveying student issues to administration. Because of SGA’s resources and relations it is crucial that student government representatives sustain a clear chain of communication between students to adequately represent students.

In the past two years I have consistently fought to reach out to diverse groups of students to sufficiently advocate for students. The Student Government Association needs a more clear chain of communication among students to create an environment on campus where students know how to reach out to the student leaders who represent them. As president I will enhance communication between students and student leaders by increasing diversity within student government. In the past few years UMass Lowell diversity has increased significantly, but that increase in diversity is not reflected in SGA. By growing diversity within the student government association it will give SGA the opportunity to represent a wider array of students.

My record for the past two years on student government reflects my steadfast belief in representing all student affairs and interest in all aspects. I hope that on April 15 and 16, I can count on your support!
