Softball drops doubleheader to University of Maine

In their America East debut, the women of UMass Lowell’s softball team dropped both games in a doubleheader against the Maine Black Bears.

In the first game, the River Hawks found themselves in a hole early, giving up five runs over the first two innings. They managed just one run against Maine pitcher Alexis Bogdanovich. The lone tally came in the third inning when junior Abbey Jamieson connected for a single that brought home teammate Ally Greene.

Freshman Alisha Welch went 2-3 in the first game, but the River Hawks combined for just six total hits. Sophomore Brianna Martin saw her nine-game hit streak come to an end as she went 0-4 in the first contest.

The second game featured some late drama, as Lowell rallied from an 8-4 deficit in the sixth inning to cut the Black Bears lead to one. Maine responded immediately however, with four additional runs of their own, winning the game by a final score of 12-9.

Martin made up for a hitless first game by collecting two hits and three RBIs in the second game of the doubleheader. Junior Ariana Darcy also had a good outing, collecting three RBIs of her own.

Maine improved its record to 12-9 (4-1 America East), while Lowell fell to 4-15 (0-2 America East). The River Hawks next home game is Sunday, April 6 against Holy Cross.
