‘Nick Jonas’ album review

Nick Jonas is back, but has left his brothers behind. A lot has changed since they took a trip to the “Year 3000” or even since 2004 when a young Jonas released his debut solo album, “Who I Am.” Jonas has left Disney behind, graduating to a more adult sound and look, a path many former child stars have taken.

This self-titled album pulls from many of Jonas’ influences such as The Beatles, Kanye West and Frank Ocean. Straying from the familiar pop sound of the Jonas Brothers, Nick has opted for a more R&B sound. The 11-track album features familiar names such as Angel Haze, Mike Posner and his former “Camp Rock” co-star Demi Lovato. The first single from the album, “Jealous,” which features singer-songwriter Tinashe, topped the Trending 140 chart in the first week.

Nick Jonas has a decent amount of vocal talent, but his lyrics could use some work. Although “Avalanche,” featuring Lovato, is a beautiful slow song, it is few and far between in this album. “I Want You” has a more aggressive tone and is about how he will take back what he deserves if you lead him on: “Motherf*cker never loved me/So I’ll take it back, what I deserve/‘Cause I deserve better.”

Needless to say, this album is very different from what we have heard before. Jonas has left his pure and innocent sound behind to pursue a more adult vibe; “Hold On,” “S.O.S.” and “When You Look Me in the Eyes” are songs of our past. Although there are rumors of a Jo-Bro reunion, as of now, performances of these songs will only be a memory.
