Less than 24 hours after UMass Lowell handed Binghamton its first league loss in the second game of a doubleheader, the River Hawks capped a great weekend, rallying from 6 runs down to beat the Bearcats 8-7 Sunday afternoon at LeLacheur Park.

The River Hawks advanced to a 13-14 overall record, with a 3-6 in the America East Conference.

Michael Young’s sacrifice fly scored Chris Sharpe in the bottom of the ninth inning to cement the comeback win.

UMass Lowell trailed 6-0 in the fifth inning, but scored three times each in the fifth and sixth innings to get back in the game, and also scored one in the bottom of the eighth after Binghamton took back the lead.

Brendon Long, the River Hawk’s fourth pitcher of the day, got the win after completing a 1-2-3 in the top of the ninth inning.

Shortstop Ben Prada had three hits and Oscar Marchena and Joe Consolmagno each had a pair of hits for the River Hawks. Marchena also drove in three runs. Steve Passatempo knocked in two runs.

The Bearcats scored four runs in the top of the second inning off the UMass Lowell starter, Nick Kuzia, highlighted by a two-run single by Reed Gamache. Binghamton increased their lead to 6-0 on a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch in the top of the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the inning, the River Hawks started their comeback. A walk to Mark Tumosa, followed by a single by Prada and Consolmago getting hit a pitch, loaded the bases. Marchena drove home the River Hawk’s first with an infield groundout. Passatempo then followed with a two-run single to left to make the score 6-3.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the River Hawks added another three runs to tie the game 6-6. Ian Strom started the inning with a single and stole second. Andy Savard then singled to make first and third. Tumosa then hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 6-4.

Prada singled and then Consolmagno followed with an RBI single for Lowell’s fifth run. Marchena singled to score Prada from third to tie the game.

That score stayed until the eighth inning until the Bearcats got an RBI single by Eddie Posavec to give them the 7-6 lead.

In the bottom of the inning, UMass Lowell tied it again 7-7. With one out in the inning, Prada singled and stole second base and then came home on Marchena’s single.

UMass Lowell’s winning rally in the bottom of the ninth was started with a walk to Sharpe, who went to second on a wild pitch. Sharpe went to third on Strom’s groundout and then Young won the game for the River Hawks with a sacrifice fly.

The River Hawks are back in action Tuesday at Dartmouth College at 3 p.m.
