Spinners fall 3-1 to the Yankees

Despite an early lead, the Lowell Spinners (14-11) couldn’t rally back against the Staten Island Yankees (17-8) in the 3-1 defeat on Tuesday night. The contest featured five different pitchers for the Spinners.

The Spinners got on the board first, with center fielder Ryan McLean scoring the only run in the first inning. McLean singled on a line drive for Lowell, and was able to get home from a sacrifice bunt by right fielder Chris Maderna, and a ground ball from left fielder Ryan Scott.

The Spinners held onto their lead for the second inning, keeping the Yankees scoreless. Steen earned a strikeout in the inning to, his second out of four on the night.

Staten Island was able to tie it up in the third, after a double and a wild pitch allowed the visiting team to send one home. Two more doubles in the third inning gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning.

The Spinners were unable to score in the third and fourth inning, despite a line drive single from catcher Roldani Baldwin in the fourth. Two more strikeouts by Steen kept the Yankees from furthering their lead.

Steen was replaced in the fifth inning by Brad Stone, after earning four strikeouts, six hits, and three runs for the night.

Staten Island extended their lead in the fifth inning, after a double and a sacrifice fly sent the Yankees’ third runner home. A ground out to second baseman Carlos Tovar ended the inning for the Yankees. Lowell was unable to score despite earning hits from McLean and designated hitter Yoan Aybar.

The Spinners trailed by two heading into the sixth inning. Three quick outs for Staten Island gave Lowell a promising chance at bat, but a McLean struck out and Maderna was caught stealing.

Another pitching change came for Lowell in the seventh, with Matthew Gorst replacing Stone. Stone earned no strikeouts, one walk, and no hits in his two innings.

Gorst was replaced in the eighth inning by Kuehl McEachern after pitching no strikeouts, one walk, and no hits in the seventh, his only inning pitched.

Lowell kept Staten Island from scoring for the rest of the night. McEachern allowed only one hit and earned two strikeouts before being replaced by Casey Jansenn. Jansenn closed out the night with no hits and no walks.

The Spinners were unable to score another run for the night despite a double by Tovar and a single by second baseman Nick Lovullo. Lowell rounded out their night offensively with two strikeouts to end the ninth inning.


The Spinners remain home to conclude the series with the Staten Island Yankees on Wednesday morning at 11 a.m.
