UMass Lowell’s Theatre Arts Program is putting the finishing touches on its production of a devised piece, “P.O.V.” in preparation for its debut on April 18.

David E. Shane, former associate artistic director of the Bristol Valley Theatre, co-founder of Footlights Entertainment and director of UMass Lowell’s 2016 Spring production of “Refuge,” returned to direct a group of UMass Lowell theatre artists in creating and producing a play from scratch.

About Devised Documentary Theatre:

“Devised Documentary Theatre,” Shane says, “is a blend of two widely used methods – Devised Theatre and Verbatim Theatre. The dialogue in “P.O.V.” is drawn entirely from interviews conducted by members of the Development Ensemble. Interviews were transcribed and edited for length, but the views, opinions and words themselves remain entirely those of the interviewees.”

About the process:

With the intention of collecting views and stories from a variety of perspectives, the development ensemble for “P.O.V.” conducted interviews with immigrants, military veterans, married couples, children, fellow students and more throughout February and March. Actors not only memorized words, but studied the physicality, mannerisms and characters of real people. In this way, “P.O.V.” is an honest, true-to-life exploration of differing points of view, and a celebration of the possibility for difference in opinion.

Performances:

Performances for the play will be held at 7:30 P.M. on Wednesday, April 18 through Saturday, April 21, and there will be a showing at 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, April 22. All of these shows will be at the Comley-Lane Theater located at 870 Broadway Street in Lowell, Massachusetts.
