Identity of student found dead in Ball Hall released

The university has released the identity of the student who was found dead in a UMass Lowell academic building over the weekend.

The body of Mario Barrera, a senior mechanical engineering major, was found in a Ball Hall bathroom Sunday morning. UMass Lowell and state police investigated the incident and deemed Barrera’s death non-suspicious.

An official cause of death has not been released.

A statement from the university is available below:

“The UMass Lowell community was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of student Mario Barrera, which occurred on campus over the weekend.

Mario was a senior mechanical engineering major from Methuen. He has been described by faculty and friends, many of whom attended a candlelight vigil for him on Tuesday evening, as extremely well-liked and hard-working.

Mario’s family has informed the university that a prayer service will be held at Selimiye Mosque, 105-A Oakland Avenue, Methuen, Mass. on Thursday, Feb. 4 at 11:30 a.m. and that our community is invited to attend.

On behalf of Chancellor Moloney and the entire UMass Lowell community, I extend our condolences to Mario’s family, friends and loved ones.

Counseling resources are available for students now and always via Counseling Services and for faculty and staff via the Employee Assistance Program.”
