As the student newspaper of UMass Lowell, The Connector offers all students the opportunity to earn resume-building, career-launching experience in a real-world news environment regardless of your major or concentration. Experience with student media is essential for those with career aspirations in writing, journalism, public relations, and more. Communication and time management skills gained through The Connector translate to all aspects of professional life as well.
UMass Lowell students who join The Connector have the opportunity to interview and photograph Division I athletes, university administrators and city officials, local musicians and artists, cover concerts and events at the Tsongas Center, travel to NCAA tournament games and more. Current and former members of The Connector have gone on to intern or work for WHDH, NESN, the Lowell Sun, the Hartford Courant, the Eagle-Tribune, and more.
We also offer opportunities in our advertising department to sell ad space to local businesses and campus departments in our newspaper and online. Each successful ad sale is met with a 10% commission ($15 minimum) to the salesperson. Students additionally have the opportunity to gain experience in graphic design and video editing through The Connector using Adobe InDesign and Premiere Pro, respectively.
We meet to discuss story ideas and news surrounding UMass Lowell every Monday at 6 p.m. during fall and spring semesters in our office, University Crossing Suite 241, located in the Club Hub. All students are welcome to attend all meetings.
