November is one of the busiest months of the year for new movies. With the Oscars quickly approaching, films striving for major nominations are often released during this time of year so they are freshly in voters’ minds for consideration. Films also come out around this time to capitalize on family audiences, which are more numerous because of the upcoming holidays. That said, here are five movies to get excited about this month.

“Eternals”

“Eternals” is the newest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is directed by Chloe Zhao, who won Best Picture and Best Director last year for her movie “Nomadland”. “Eternals” features a star-studded cast, including Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kumail Nanjiani, Lia McHugh, Brian Tyree Henry, Lauren Ridloff, Barry Keoghan, Don Lee, Harish Patel, Kit Harington, Salma Hayek and Angelina Jolie.

The Eternals are an immortal alien race, who have hidden on Earth for thousands of years after being mysteriously placed there by an unknown being. Initially, they are instructed to avoid interfering in any human conflicts, but they are eventually forced out of hiding when their counterparts, the Deviants, launch an attack on Earth. How it plays into the greater Marvel Cinematic Universe is yet to be seen, but Marvel is sure to have another hit on its hands with this cast. “Eternals” premiered in theaters on Nov. 5.

“Spencer”

“Spencer” stars Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana of Wales and imagines what the final days of her marriage to Prince Charles may have looked like. Drama within British royalty is nothing new to mainstream media. “Spencer” has been accumulating early praise and will likely be a major contender at the Oscars this year. Stewart’s performance, in particular, has received widespread attention, making her the front-runner for Best Actress.

Beyond this, many of the film’s details remain under wraps. Right now, “Spencer” is only available to watch in select theaters in the United States. However, as the award season continues, it is likely to be released in more theaters or on streaming platforms.

“Ghostbusters: Afterlife”

“Ghostbusters: Afterlife” is the newest attempt at reviving the famed movie franchise. After the relative failure of the 2016 reboot, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” disregards this and instead serves as a 30-years-later sequel to “Ghostbusters II”. It stars Mckenna Grace, Finn Wolfhard and Carrie Coon as Dr. Egon Spengler’s family, as well as cameos from the original “Ghostbusters” cast.

With a family-friendly, action-comedy approach, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” seems like a fun, nostalgic trip down memory lane for fans of the franchise while still being an introductory film for younger generations to enjoy. The film will be released in theaters on Nov. 19.

“Encanto”

“Encanto” is the latest film by Walt Disney Animation Studios. The film comes from the creators of preceding hit films like “Raya and the Last Dragon”, “Frozen II”, “Moana”, “Zootopia” and more. It takes place in a fantasy version of Colombia and follows a girl who is the only member of her family without magical powers and must find a way to save them all. “Encanto” is a musical, with songs written by Lin-Manuel Miranda of “Hamilton” and “Moana”.

Coming from one of the most reliable contemporary animation studios, and with songs from one of the best songwriters in musicals right now, “Encanto” is certain to become a family hit this winter. Disney typically does an excellent job of appealing to adults as well, and “Encanto” is unlikely to be an exception to this. The movie comes out in theaters on Nov. 24.

“House of Gucci”

Last, but certainly not least, comes a film from iconic Director Ridley Scott, titled “House of Gucci”. It follows the real-life murder of Maurizio Gucci by his ex-wife Patrizia Gucci, the first portrayed by Adam Driver and the latter by Lady Gaga. Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, Salma Hayek and Al Pacino are also part of the star-studded cast.

With captivating real-life subject material, an A-list cast full of fantastic performers and one of the generation’s strongest directors, “House of Gucci” seems like a worthy nominee of several Oscar awards. It comes out in theaters on Nov. 24.
