“Fire Emblem Shadows” is a mobile game that blends strategy and social deduction. It was released on Sept. 25, 2025 for Android and iOS. The publisher is Nintendo and the developer is Intelligent Systems.

The game takes place in a medieval setting where Prince Kurt, wanted by the empire of Fenris, goddess of shadows, teams up with allies to flee for the kingdom of Holtz. The game features a system where the player, known as a “disciple,” joins forces with computer-generated characters to fight to the death in head-to-head battles in order to progress through interactive, episodic visual novel cutscenes that a player can click through.

The combat portion of the game gives the player dual options: the option to fight for the Light, and the option to fight for the Shadow and be the traitor the other disciples have to try to vote out. Players can exert attacks on the opposing side or heal themselves, and there is a waiting period before they can do so, as the gameplay is turn-based.

The first Light round pits the player and two other disciples against a group of enemies, and the first round ends after one side is killed. After the first round, the player votes on which one of the two disciples is a traitor working for the other side. This is the social deduction portion of the game. Voting correctly for the traitor will result in more health points given to the player during the next battle. When the traitor is revealed following the vote, they turn into a monster, join the Shadow side and start competing against the remaining two disciples in the following round. Following this, whichever team gets killed first loses the round.

On the contrary, the first Shadow round starts off with the player fighting with the Light side. During the course of battle, however, the player acting as traitor has opportunities to cast minor damage to members of the Light side. After the battle ends, the Light side votes for who they think is the traitor and would receive extra health points for the next round if they guessed that the player is the traitor. After the traitor is revealed, the player’s disciple turns into a monster and joins the Shadow side to fight against the Light side. Just like the Light option, the team that dies first loses the round.

At the end of a given Light or Shadow battle set, the player will receive a certain number of rewards based on their performance in battle, which serve to unlock story chapters. If the player manages to win the battle, they are given more rewards than if they lost. The player can also collect rewards if they choose the traitor correctly in Light mode.

Players can appreciate that they can still obtain rewards and progress in the story after losing a battle. However, frustrations with the gameplay include the difficulty of winning in Shadow mode and the repetitive nature of battle.

The story portion of the game is similarly broken into two parts: Light and Shadow. In order to progress in these stories, one must collect Story Fragments in battle. The Light story starts off explaining how an empire has destroyed the Kingdom of Ast, including its king, queen, and its soldiers. Kurt, a prince who has escaped from there, resolves to avenge what happened and reclaim his homeland. The Shadow story introduces the presence of monsters in the game and the temptation that if one becomes acquainted with dark shadow energy, their wishes will come true.

For the graphics, an interesting aspect is the attention to detail when crafting the design for the dual modes. When the player is given an option to battle for either the Light or Shadow side, upon clicking each button to do so, they will find that the backgrounds change for each mode. The Light mode features a natural background during daytime, and the Shadow mode has the same background taking place during nighttime. In particular, the Shadow mode is visually appealing, with purple lighting coloring the aura of the player’s chosen disciple standing out.

Overall, this game’s duality between light and shadow is intriguing. Additionally, gamers fond of visual novels can appreciate the story element of the game and its cute anime designs for the characters if they can find enough time to battle enemies.
