Thanks to 1-0 overtime win against Vermont over the weekend, the UMass Lowell men’s hockey team clinched the No. 2 seed for the Hockey East playoffs, guaranteeing that they will enjoy home ice during the quarterfinal series as well as a first round bye.
This season marks the third in a row where the River Hawks will enjoy playing on their home ice for the playoffs. Head coach Norm Bazin’s arrival at Lowell three years ago has marked the resurgence of UMass Lowell ice hockey – the team has won at least 20 games a season since Bazin’s arrival, as well as spots in both the Hockey East and NCAA playoffs.
Lowell looks to be a strong contender again for the playoffs this year. Boasting an outsanding goaltending duo of Connor Hellebuyck and Doug Carr, the River Hawks feature one of the strongest overall defenses in Hockey East.
While injuries have somewhat plagued Lowell this year especially on the offensive side of the puck, the return of Scott Wilson from injury will add an extra boost to the team’s offense and power play. Despite having a number of key players miss time throughout the season, the River Hawks have found a way to continue their winning ways.
The Hockey East and NCAA tournaments are being regarded by many as Boston College’s to lose, but if Lowell enters the playoffs firing on all cylinders, they should be able to give the vaunted Eagles a serious run for their money.
Boston College will await the winner of a first round playoff clash between Boston University and Notre Dame.
Notre Dame beat the Eagles in their regular season finale in overtime.
Lowell swept UMass Amherst in the regular season series, and split their Hockey East sregular season against the Catamounts of Vermont.
