UMass Lowell’s very own all-male a cappella group, Hawkapella, will be hosting their Fifth Annual Night of A Cappella concert this Sat. April 18 in Maloney Hall at University Crossing. The best part? This concert is free.

Hawkapella hosted their last concert two weeks ago in University Suites. They performed a handful of songs, medleys and mashups that mesmerized the audience, and at times evoked tears of laughter.

The Night of A Cappella concert will consist of guest performances throughout the night with Hawkapella closing the show after an intermission. The intermission will feature Hawkapella’s Chair Song, a fundraiser where audience members pay one dollar to be entered into a raffle. The winner of the raffle will be seated in a chair on-stage, surrounded by Hawkapella members who will serenade the audience member.

Hawkapella will be joined by another UMass Lowell a cappella group, the all-female Hawkettes, who were formed last Spring, along with special guests Not Too Sharp, The Parallel Fifths, Off the Clef and The Gentlemen Songsters.

Hailing from the University of New Hampshire is Not Too Sharp. The Recorded A Cappella Review Board describes Not Too Sharp and their performance as “all male, slightly goofy and possessed of an infectious energy…Charisma just drips out of the speakers.” Their YouTube music video for their rendition “Send Me on My Way” by Rusted Root has over 78,000 views.

The Parallel Fifths are Western Connecticut State University’s sole all-male a cappella group; they were crowned Connecticut Collegiate A Cappella Singoff champions in 2013. They perform a wide range of songs, from barbershop to pop.

University of New Hampshire will be represented by Off the Clef, their second co-ed a cappella group started in 2009. Their goal is to entertain and perform on campus and off campus, in the community and surrounding areas.

Lastly is Lowell’s very own local barbershop group and long-time associate of Hawkapella, the Gentlemen Songsters, who are partners with the Barbershop Harmony Society. They perform four-part close harmony singing, and their 45 members come from all over the Merrimack Valley. They are always welcoming new members to perform with them.

Show your support for Hawkapella by checking them out on Facebook and purchasing a t-shirt or sticker available for sale during intermission. The concert takes place this Sat. April 18 in University Crossing’s Moloney Hall. Doors open at 6 p.m. and music starts at 6:30.
