Album review: We Are Scientists – “TV en Francais”

Since 2000, We Are Scientists have been releasing music. This past Monday, March 3rd, they released their fourth studio album. After “Brain Thrust Mastery,” “With Love and Squalor,” and “Barbara,” they have released a terrific album, titled “Tv En Français.” There has been a good amount of hype around this album; it’s their first in four years and a few months ago the band announced that although they had, then, just put out their E.P. “Business as Casual,” a new album could be expected soon. The band is likely to play a lot of this album on their tour this year. We Are Scientists don’t tour much, but they decided that 2014 is “the year of touring.” This year they will tour Europe and the United States in their entirety as well as select other parts of the world.

While this band’s better known songs include “After Hours” and “The Great Escape,” their new album is much more pop-music based. The bulk of their music is pop-rock, but this is more of a high-pitched sound. It’s mostly upbeat and many of the songs are catchy. The song “Make It Easy” is a very catchy tune with easy lyrics to remember and follow along to.

On par with their previous records and songs, many of these tunes appear to be about drinking, sex, and parties. “Make It Easy” and “Do What You Do Best” are perfect examples of these. The two songs, as well as a few others on the album, are very clearly about drinking and trying to have a good time. The band’s older songs, like “After Hours and “I Don’t Bite” are great older examples of this too. We Are Scientists is a band that loves to party.

This album seems to draw from other artists’ influences as well. In the fifth track, “Courage,” it seems as though the band was influenced by instrumentals of R.E.M.’s album, “Automatic For the People,” specifically their song “Everybody Hurts.” The two bands are comparable, usually in the pop-rock style of music that they both shared. (R.E.M. broke up in 2008.)

“Make It Easy,” “Sprinkles,” and “Take an Arrow” are a few of my favorite tracks on the album. I think this album was on-par with their previous ones and I strongly recommend it to anyone who is a fan of We Are Scientists. We Are Scientists is a band that I think anyone who likes Arctic Monkeys, Weezer, Coldplay or any other pop-rock based band. They are typically very easy going music that’s enjoyable to listen to. The band is coming to the Brighton Music Hall on April 19th, and this reporter will certainly be there!
