The UMass Lowell women’s basketball team entered the Costello center on Wednesday, Feb. 12 trying to build on the momentum that they had gained coming off their come-from-behind victory against UMBC and use it against the University of Vermont.

Unlike their previous game, the River Hawks didn’t have to play catch up as they took the lead only 28 seconds into the game and never gave it up, soundly beating the Catamounts 87-71. The River Hawks spread the ball out all over the court and got production from all of their starters.

The win moved the River Hawks to a 5-18 regular season record and a 4-8 conference record which, in the team’s first year of Division I play, is very impressive.

Even though the River Hawks cannot compete for a post season title while in a four year probation period, the fact that the River Hawks now sit in 6th place out of 9 teams in the America East Conference is still an incredible feat — even more so since the preseason poll had the River Hawks in last place.

“Very excited about the way we played tonight” said Head Coach Sarah Behn about her team’s efforts in the game. The River Hawks put together two solid halves with outstanding offense and defense.

The River Hawks were led by their five starters who all had tremendous games. Jasmine McRoy, whom Behn called a “fabulous player and explosive,” had a new career high in points with 27 to lead the River Hawks in scoring while also pulling in six rebounds.

Shannon Samuels had a fantastic game as well with 21 points, five assists and four rebounds while going 9-11 at the line. Lindsey Doucette recorded her 4th career double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds.
Brittany Lomanno tallied 10 points, three assists, three rebounds and shot 4-6 at the line while playing a total of 34 minutes, which was second highest on the team. Lauren Fiola had another strong game, playing significant minutes and contributing on both ends of the court.

This has already been a season to be proud of, but after last Wednesday’s game the River Hawks don’t look to be done yet.
