Pool tournament brings no shortage of talent

Fox Common’s monthly pool tournament played on Jan. 28 brought no shortage of talent. Though the altered date slipped past many students’ minds, all of the students who participated in the single elimination tournament brought their “A-game.”

Their best efforts, unfortunately, were not enough to slow down the obliterating trail blazed by tournament winner Moses Muchiri and runner-up Arthur Etienne.

Muchiri swept Etienne in a best-of-three series in the final round of the pool competition. However, this does not mean that Etienne was not impressive throughout the night or in the final matchup.

Spectator Neil Alves commented, “That game was really exciting for me, especially watching two great players like [Etienne and Muchiri].”

Leading up to the final round, Etienne quickly disposed of his opponents with a remarkable combination of skill and precision on the pool table. He made quick work of his first opponent, Nana Agyemang, leaving him with four of his seven balls left on the table at the conclusion of the match.

In disbelief, Agyemang asked, “Why did I have to get you in the first round?”

Etienne went on to defeat Joseph Varanum, both of whom brought their own cues to the contest. Varanum fell short, but had no regrets in regards to his efforts.  Craig Frigom was the last obstacle separating Etienne from the final round, but he, too, would not last long.

The second table belonged to Muchiri from the first break. Like Etienne, Muchiri played a nearly flawless tournament to ensure his place in the finals.

“I was scared. I didn’t think I was going to make it this far,” said Etienne during the first of two matches with Muchiri. He called it a “good, really close game” after the second loss that made him the runner-up.

Both finalists went home winners, as they were presented with $25 gift cards, courtesy of Fox Common.

Fox Common will host their next pool tournament on Feb. 11 at 9 p.m.
