Mothers of Rock: A Tribute to Women in Music

March 8 7:30 P.M Durgin Hall Benefit Concert

The past and the future of music collide in the present for one night only in Lowell. This year, the Music Entertainment Industry Student Association presents the 10th anniversary of it’s annual tribute to women in music, Mothers of Rock. This year, old favorites from years past will be returning while future stars will be featured in this spectacular night for the ages.

As it has been for the 10 years previous, Mothers of Rock will feature acts playing originals and covers. Each act will be honoring a female artist with their cover to pay tribute in their own way to the women who pioneered into new territories and reached the heights of stardom in their careers.

This year’s line up includes tributes to acts such as Joan Jett, Christina Aguilera, Aretha Franklin, Paramore, Dolly Parton and Lorde. The show will feature such diverse musical stylings as rock, pop, r&b, christian worship and reggae.

Many performers this year are returning from previous years on this momentous 10th anniversary, such as Gypsy Blue, UMass Lowell faculty Lisa Abdallah and UML’s Acapella group Vocality.
Among this year’s new acts, Sarah Borrello will be featured as the closing act of the program. Borrello is currently nominated as the Rock Act of the Year at this year’s New England Music Awards. She has been a big splash with the release of her latest album Exit, which led to her nomination. This has led to a string of shows with national touring acts, interviews and video appearances with some of the New England music scene’s most current underground channels here she has built a following of over a thousand strong.

The show itself is a fundraiser for the benefit of Girls Inc. of Lowell and MEISA. Girls Inc. is a national nonproft organization dedicated to responding to the changing needs of girls in their communities. To this end they promote a positive voice for girls through media advocacy and brings to light the critical issues girls face in the present.

MEISA is a student run organization that aims to give students experience working in the many diverse fields of the music industry. The Lowell chapter not only reaches out towards national organizations to give their members real world connections to the music industry, but holds events designed for the cultivation and stimulus of Lowell’s music scene.
