The Oscars have a great sense of humor

Every year, I look forward to the annual presentation of the Oscars. They always manage to incorporate great humor in their broadcast, and this year was no different. I found myself in a constant uproar throughout the evening. While you may be surprised though, I’m not talking about the performance of Ellen Degeneres, even though it was hilarious. I’m speaking of how I go to see a good amount of movies every year, and when I see a few that I think the academy will vote for any award, the academy goes, “Psych! That movie isn’t going to win anything!”

Simply looking at the nominees for Movie of the Year make me giggle. Perhaps they will inspire laughter from you as well: “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “American Hustle,” “Captain Phillips,” “Dallas Buyers Club,” “Gravity,” “Her,” “Nebraska,” Philomena,” and the eventual winner “12 Years a Slave.” Oh, I always get a kick out of it. Those silly guys nominate 9 movies in total, and only 4 of them did good in the box office (“Gravity,” “American Hustle,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” and “Captain Phillips”). What perhaps is even funnier is that the only one of these movies to win any award was “Gravity”.

I can only imagine what it must have been like for Leonardo DiCaprio. He was nominated for his work in “The Wolf of Wall Street,” and it wasn’t even the best selling movie for Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Great Gatsby” was).

The winners of Best Actor and Best Actress were also funny too this year. Oddly, one of my favorite actresses, Cate Blanchet, won for her performance in “Blue Jasmine,” which I didn’t know was the name of a movie until the night of the Oscar’s. Also, another of my favorite actors, Matthew McGonaughey, won for his work in “The Wolf of Wall St-“ (psych!) “Dallas Buyer’s Club,” which according to the trailer has nothing to do with buying or clubbing.

Then there were the numerous snubs who didn’t win anything. Among this year’s movies that were winless were, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” “Iron Man 3,” “Man of Steel,” and “The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug.”

Perhaps the worst thing about the Oscar’s is that it’s hard to knock. I could look at these movies on one hand and be shocked that I’ve never seen a trailer or heard a recommendation and it still won. On the other hand though, the trailers and clips they showed were amazing. Take even the Best Movie of the Year, “12 Years a Slave”. From the clips they showed during the broadcast, it looked like a phenomenal movie. However, I don’t remember seeing one commercial for it. Who am I to say it was a better or worse movie that a “Hunger Games” or a “Iron Man 3?” The Oscar’s may have several shocking moments, but at least it is good that these lesser known movies can attain recognition, even if it’s at the expense of these other movies that were hugely popular.
