River Hawks baseball sweeps doubleheader against UMBC

UMass Lowell baseball throttled the University of Maryland Baltimore County in both games of their doubleheader on Saturday. The River Hawks won game one 5-1 and game two 15-1.
The story in the first game was the pitching of UMass Lowell’s Shane Beauchemin, who went the distance for a four-hit complete game victory.

The River Hawks broke a tie in the third inning and took the lead for good when Jacob O’Keefe roped an RBI single into the outfield and scored Ian Strom, who moved from second base to third on a wild pitch and then scored on O’Keefe’s single.

A couple insurance runs in the ninth sealed the River Hawks victory in game one. In game two, they didn’t waste much time in continuing the offensive momentum they built by the end of the first game. Game two was seven innings instead of nine, which was probably good news for UMBC pitching.

The River Hawks collected 16 hits en route to their 15-1 win. Nine of the hits were for extra bases.

“We did a lot of good things today,” head coach Ken Harring said to goriverhawks.com. “I can’t say enough good things about the way we played. We executed at bat and in the field.”

With the wins, UMass Lowell baseball increased their winning streak to five games. Their record sits even at 15-15, and the River Hawks are now third in the America East conference standings.
