UMass Lowell athletics struggle, strive and succeed during first year in Division I

It’s been an exciting year of sports at UMass Lowell, and as the semester winds down, it provides a nice perspective on the accomplishments of UMass Lowell athletics in their first year playing in the America East conference.

While volleyball experienced a tough first season, there was always a spark when the team played, and it should serve as a building block for the future.

Men’s and women’s soccer earned their first ever Division I victories, and field hockey turned heads on their bright blue field. Golf had a number of highlights while surviving through their unique season.

Hockey continued its transformation into a Hockey East power, winning its second consecutive Hockey East title.

But the Tsongas Center now can boast hardwood as well as hockey – River Hawks basketball thrilled crowds during their inaugural season in America East.

Baseball and softball have had their fare share of ups and downs so far this season, but are proving that they will be viable competitors when they become eligible for postseason play.

Track and field has consistently impressed and has a number of young, talented athletes who have already broken records.

UMass Lowell will welcome men’s and women’s lacrosse next season, which should nicely round out the field of different teams.

If you’re a senior, athlete or not, be happy with how quickly UMass Lowell athletics have evolved – it will make for more and more proud alumni.

If you’re continuing on at UMass Lowell in the fall, be sure to head out and support all the different teams that will be competing.

And if you’re a big sports fan, write about it! The Connector will need a sports editor and content, so why not put your name in a byline and get involved. There’s never been a better time to do so.
As the University continues to expand, its athletics will become more and more representative of the culture and community of Lowell.

As fun of a year its been for UMass Lowell athletics, its been just as fun writing about them. Every team had a unique story to share, and that should hold true for future seasons as well.
