In 2014, screens across the world were graced with a phenomenal horror film titled “The Babadook.” Produced and filmed in Australia and shown at the Sundance Film Festival, this film has received critical acclaim and has been nominated for a number of awards since its release. It has received an outstanding rating of 97 percent on rottentomatoes.com, averaging a rating of 8.2 out of 10.

The film stars Essie Davis as a grief stricken, tormented mother and Noah Wiseman as her traumatized yet courageous son. “The Babadook” is the perfect film for any horror thriller junkie. Director Jennifer Kent does an expert job of blending suspense and terror, leaving every person watching it on the edge of their seats. The young Wiseman adds a perfect amount of spunk to the film, giving you a chance to catch your breath.

Beneath the horror aspect of the film, there is a touching story about a mother coping with tragedy, a son’s unconditional love for his mother and the two together overcoming insurmountable odds in the face of evil. This film truly has something for everyone and you will not leave the theater disappointed.

Instead of hiding behind gore, there is a raw truth to this film that one can appreciate. Without giving too much away, the story begins with the children’s story “Mister Babadook.” Once the story is read, the character terrorizes you non-stop, leaving you weak and your mind vulnerable to his attack. It will start with three knocks, and you’ll know he’s there, but be wary not to let him in because you can’t get rid of the Babadook.

– “The Babadook” will be playing at the Luna Theater at Mill No. 5 this January. Check their calendar for showtimes.
