The UMass Lowell women’s basketball team earned its first win of the season against Boston University, with a final score of 70-57 at the Tsongas Center Tuesday night.

“Just really happy for these young women, just working hard to pull this one out, and just some really big plays in the second half,” said Head Coach Jenerrie Harris.

The River Hawks have had good luck playing at the Tsongas in past seasons. “It’s always exciting playing in Tsongas,” said senior forward Lindsey Doucette. “We have a winning record here so I think that gets us pumped every game.”

Doucette, the player of the game, led the team in steals (4), defensive rebounds (7) and points (23), falling just one point shy of her career high.

Both Doucette and Asia Mitchell-Owens played a strong game, and both attributed the win to the drive of the entire team. “This isn’t just an individual thing,” said Mitchell-Owens. “You don’t get this good without your teammates. We push each other every single day,”

The River Hawks started off strong, scoring first and taking an early 5-point lead in the first quarter. Strong defensive pressure held Boston University to only eight points, while UMass Lowell’s thrived offensively with six points from Doucette and an additional five from Mitchell-Owens.

The second quarter started with a comeback for Boston University, who came out with a 3-pointer and a layup to start the quarter, eliminating UMass Lowell’s lead and tying the game. The River Hawks responded in kind, and the quarter ended with 19 points for each team, with UMass Lowell back in the lead and Mitchell-Owens scoring a pair of 3-pointers.

After halftime, UMass Lowell came out strong once more, outscoring Boston University by six points. The fast-paced offense from UMass Lowell gave the River Hawks an 11-point lead over their opponent and consisted of a balanced offense, with five different River Hawks scoring in the quarter. The physical third quarter also saw six fouls committed by Boston University and five by UMass Lowell.

The fourth quarter featured the largest lead of the game, with UMass Lowell ahead by nineteen points. However, Boston University came back stronger as the quarter went on, earning 21 points to UMass Lowell’s 23 points. Boston University couldn’t make the impact needed, and the game ended in a 13-point UMass Lowell victory.

With the first win of the season, UMass Lowell improves to a 1-5 record, while Boston University falls to 0-5.

UMass Lowell will travel to face Florida International and the University of Miami on Dec. 4 and 5.
