In the newest visual novel by Black Tabby Games, players are given the opportunity to go against fairytale stereotypes.

Released on October 23, 2023, “Slay the Princess” tells the story of an imprisoned princess whom the player must put to death. Otherwise, she will end the world. A seemingly easy objective, considering she is chained to a wall. But that wouldn’t be fun, would it?

“Slay the Princess” begins with a cabin in the woods. The player is accompanied by the Narrator and the Voice of the Hero, each with opposing opinions on what to do about the Princess. The player is urged to do different things, but the choice is ultimately theirs. By combining psychological horror with philosophical themes, the story can go in various directions. The player may even form a relationship with the Princess—though they are advised not to.

Upon entering the basement of the cabin, the player is greeted by the supposed destroyer of the world, or the Princess. Dressed in a gown with a hefty handcuff around her right wrist, she is in a vulnerable position compared to the armed player. However, she is fully aware of the task at hand and will attempt to persuade them to free her. The player can get straight to the point, or they can ask questions—both to the Princess and the Narrator. There are numerous to choose from, but keep in mind that no direct answers are ever given. As the story progresses, however, realizations will begin to emerge. It is one of the key features of the game—the slow-growing awareness of who (or what) the Princess truly is, and the player’s part in her story.

Another key feature of “Slay the Princess” is its art style. From beginning to end, each and every scene is made up of pencil sketches. The game is entirely in black and white, minus the eerie color red, which taints the player’s screen from time to time. It may seem bare compared to Black Tabby’s previous visual novel, “Scarlet Hollow.” But the scratchy lines and the stark contrast between light and shadow fit the ghastly imagery of the game.

In addition to haunting visuals is an equally evocative soundtrack. And when paired together, they create a chillingly immersive experience. Courtesy of media composer Brandon Boone, “Slay the Princess” takes the player through a whirlwind of atmospheric tracks. From dreamy piano melodies to powerful orchestral crescendos, they will find themselves engrossed in the ambiance of the game for hours on end. Not to mention the alluring voice of the Princess herself. Voiced by Nichole Goodnight, she embodies both the damsel in distress and the heroine—oftentimes one soon after the other. But it is entirely up to the player to shape the persona that they encounter.

Overall, “Slay the Princess” is a great visual novel for those who are fans of horror that is not too heavy on gore and jump scares. The player will see traces of blood, and they will hear sudden noises. But the true terror comes from the thought-provoking questions that arise with every unsettling dialogue. It is a well-written, Grimm-like fairytale with wonderful artwork and music that will surely captivate all players.

Available on Microsoft Windows, Linux and macOS, “Slay the Princess” can be purchased on Steam and GOG for $17.99.
