UMass Lowell is partnering with Catholic Charities of Boston to feed families once again this Thaksgiving. On Monday, Nov. 25, UMass Lowell will launch an operation out of the Inn and Conference Center to deliver Thanksgiving meals to 300 families in and around Lowell. The turkey delivery will be from 12 p.m. until 6 p.m.
The event is entirely financed by donations, with $15 providing a full meal to a family. The event is run by volunteers and needs more students to sign up in order to be pulled off successfully.
The university has facilitated similar events since as early as 2009. In earlier years, they took the form of food collections, but in recent years the food has been purchased with the help of donations.
The number of families being fed has approximately doubled since 2009, when UMass Lowell reported that “for 150 area families, there were full bellies all around on Thanksgiving.” With UMass Lowell’s student body historically committed to service, these numbers have seen an increase over the last 10 years.
UMass Lowell Campus Ministries work to put the event on every year, and they encourage students to get engaged to help others this Thanksgiving.
