Roommate Wars Part III: The Cheater

To live on campus means to endure a tiny room with one other person, your roommate.

Now my friend Serena lived in a quad her Sophomore year and shared a room with Tanya.

The best thing about a quad is that there is a common area, so one doesn’t have to stay coped up in their bedroom. It also gives everyone the chance at privacy every once in a while.

Serena had met Tanya the year before at a freshman seminar class. They became friends and decided to room together the following year.

Tanya was a really sweet girl and kept to herself most of the time. She was an English literature major and spent most her days reading classic novels and most nights with Chad.

Tanya was in a relationship with a senior named Chad and oftentimes would bring her boyfriend over to spend the night. Not a problem especially because Serena didn’t mind sleeping in the common area every once and a while.

One night Serena was watching television with another one of her other roommates Dawn in the common area when the door opened. It was Tanya and she wasn’t with Chad.

“Hi, I am Tom,” he said to the ladies as he extended out his hand for a shake.

Serena was confused and Dawn spoke up, “Hi I’m Dawn and this is Serena.”

After the introduction Tanya and her guest went into the bedroom.
Dawn and Serena couldn’t wrap their minds around what just happened.

Serena of course kept the information to herself and never even mentioned the awkwardness with Tanya.

From then on it was a rotation between Chad and Tom.

One day while Serena was in the common area Tanya came home. Serena didn’t see her but recognized her voice and heard a male with her.

“Hey Tom, how are you?” she said.

“Who’s Tom?” he said.

Serena turned around and it was Chad not Tom.

“Sorry I meant Chad, how are you?”

Tanya and Chad just laughed it off as if it was nothing.

Chad gave Serena a fist pump and followed Tanya into the bedroom.

From then on Serena forgot about first name basis and simply said, “hi” when Tanya’s guest entered the room.
